Located in an historic former milk-processing facility near downtown Boulder, Colorado, The Dairy Arts Center is a 42,000 square-foot multi-disciplinary arts hub for live theatre, music, comedy, dance, cinema, and fine arts. The Dairy was originally founded in 1992 to provide a live performance venue and cooperative workspaces for local artists in Boulder County. Today, the Dairy is one of Colorado’s premier arts centers and one of the only multi-disciplinary arts centers in the country, incorporating multiple art galleries and performance venues, an art-house cinema, rehearsal spaces and studios all under one roof.
As they celebrate their 25th anniversary this year, The Dairy Arts Center is wrapping up extensive renovations that have added an impressive lobby, outdoor terrace, state-of-the-art theaters, and a new café. When Boulder voters approved Issue 2A in 2014 (allocating $3.85 million to the Dairy Arts Center renovation and other city improvements through a sales tax increase) the community made a conscious decision to invest in the arts. And their investment is paying off - according to a recent study, Boulder’s nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $69.8 million and supports 1,832 local jobs. And at the heart of the Boulder arts community is the Dairy Arts Center.
Recent events at the Dairy have included everything from immigrant community monologues performed by local law enforcement officials, to stand-up comedy from the writer of The Simpsons. Third Thursdays offer free music and entertainment to the public, while Dance for Parkinsons provides weekly dance classes to improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s disease. Kids at the Dairy is a no-cost arts education program for Title I schools, and a variety of regular concert series showcase unique music experiences and eclectic blends of touring and local musicians.
For cinema, the Boedecker Theater (known to locals as “The Boe”) is a nationally renowned art-house cinema offering diverse programming, from premier movies to live screenings of opera and ballet performances from around the world. Each of the Dairy’s fine arts galleries provide rotating art exhibits; workshops for adults, teens, and children; and visual arts lectures.
